The Iceman Cometh

Wim Hof has become known the world over for his spectacular records and incredible achievements: He ran a half-marathon in Lapland at -30 degrees Celsius; he frequently sits in a pool of ice for over 90 minutes; and he has swum hundreds of meters under ice above the Arctic Circle. Though his exploits have earned him numerous entries in the Guinness Book of Records, he wanted recognition on a higher level. “I am not a circus act,” he explains. “I am a scientist: my body is my lab.” Indeed, in 2011 scientists proved that Hof was able to influence his autonomic nervous system—and, thus, his immune system—something that until then was thought to be impossible.
